Current News

Mayor-elect Sam Adams to speak.
The public is invited.
This year Recycling Advocates is planning an especially
motivating and topical annual membership meeting. It will focus on
the debate raging around the usage, recycling, and banning of
plastic bags. The RA Board, Sam Adams and experts from Seattle and
San Francisco will be on hand to outline the complexities and issues
surrounding this important subject. This is our membership's
opportunity to participate along with the Board of Directors and
other active members regarding RA's plans and policy on this topic.
You can also be there to vote for the new RA Board of Directors or
nominate someone from the floor. The meeting is to be held on
Wednesday, August 6th, in the Atrium of Portland State University's
Urban Center. Light refreshments will be provided. This event is
free to our members and the general public, and we encourage you to
bring your friends and associates. We will, however, have a donation
box at the event for those interested in furthering the valuable
work being done for the citizens of Oregon and the Northwest in the
area of recycling and sustainability by Recycling Advocates.
When: Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 Annual

RA and the Rechargeable Battery
Recycling Coalition (RBRC) needs your help!
Members of Recycling
Advocates, Metro, and the DEQ began regular meetings in January
2008 to establish partnerships and plans for action in order to
increase the participation in rechargeable battery recycling
programs run by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation
(RBRC). The goal of this collaborative project is to increase the
ways to inform citizens about the issues regarding the disposal and
recycling of rechargeable batteries, promote the drop-off locations
for such recycling opportunities as well as to increase the
visibility of these programs at participating locations. Part of this project includes visits to retail locations that
currently provide RBRC rechargeable battery recycling opportunities.
Individuals of the project group have begun visiting various stores
to provide observations in order to provide evaluation of the
existing program, and we could use your help! Retail visits take
just a few minutes of observation and the target list includes
electronic product stores that you probably visit anyway.
The results from these
"boots on the ground" store visits will be
used in conjunction with other findings to provide RBRC a
recommendation in creating a local pilot project to help increase
the use of their collection opportunities.
