Emphasis on writing names on Starbucks cups distracts from bigger problem

This letter was sent to the Oregonian/Oregonlive letter to the editor from Betty Patton, regarding a front page snippet on November 29th about people using the name “Trump” on their Starbucks coffee cups.

I found it interesting, almost amusing that Starbucks’ coffee cups are being used by customers to irritate more progressive baristas by claiming their name is Trump when placing an order. However, these single use disposable cups have been irritating to many of us for a very long time.

The manufacture of just one of these cups generates almost a quarter pound of greenhouse gas emissions. They are used once and landfilled since they are not recyclable due to the plastic content. Over 50 million of these cups are trashed in the Portland Metro region every single year.

Recycling Advocates, a local nonprofit, is spearheading a grassroots campaign to encourage people to Bring Your Own Cup or to use a stay here cup when going out for coffee. Less garbage, less greenhouse gases, better planet.
